Power System Surge Protection In Intelligent Buildings

In modern intelligent buildings there are numerous electric appliances and devices which have different
lightning resistance capability, such as computers, network exchangers, servers etc. To safely protect such
devices from high transient over-voltage, surge protection measures must be taken.

Generally in the input end of power supply for distribution panels, class B SPDs can be used as first level surge
protection; for subsidiary distributions boxes, class B or class C SPDs can utilized as second level surge
protection; In third level surge protection, class D SPDs are adopted as per surge current and over-voltage
capacity.

In forth level surge protection for electric devices, normally power strips and sometimes signal SPDs are used .
